- It has been a pleasure to be affiliated with this program and it
has changed my teaching for the better. I have a much better understanding
of working with minorities and their needs and interests as it relates
to math, science and technology! It has allowed me a vehicle for going
in the classrooms in a non-threatening way to support and enhance
teacher's confidence in teaching science.
- After three years of working with teachers and students, I am even
more convinced that the Teaching SMART program is a worthy program.
It is the real deal. I personally believe that students and teachers
greatly benefit by the program. If I were a superintendent of schools,
knowing what I know now, I would certainly bring it into my school
system.
Teachers:
- Teaching SMART has given me more insight into science and it has helped to link other subject areas in
my teaching. It has helped me to mature into a better science teacher and has helped to make my students
critical thinkers.
- Teaching SMART allowed me to confidently try new lessons that the
kids would really enjoy. I paired up quite a bit with my partnering
teacher and we co-taught lessons, which worked very effectively. We
were able to get so much more done without going through half a day. We
really saw our classes beginning to LOVE SCIENCE!!!
- Teaching SMART has opened my eyes to inquiry science, and the idea that
I don't have to have all the answers - that my students need a chance
to explore on their own to see what works and what doesn't work. This
has allowed me to enjoy teaching science more since I don't have to
do so much of the work. My role has shifted to that of a facilitator,
rather than that of an instructor that disseminates information and
that is expected to know all the answers. What a relief!
- I enjoyed working with this program [Teaching SMART] and sharing ideas with the other teachers. I feel
that my students learned a lot not only about science, but working together, and the world around them. It
is definitely a program that I will continue to use with my students.
- My students enjoy science so much more because they spend their time discovering from each other, the
experiment, and group discussions that I facilitate, where before, we spent our time in the Harcourt books,
taking notes, doing worksheets, and taking tests. SMART has completely changed science in my classroom.
